Rashid's comment struck me, too. And it got me thinking about how we perform identities as writers. The people on my list who I think of as writers all talk with me about their work in progress, all stake out time for writing and feel involved in the professional conversation. They look at how other writers speak to them and look at those who don't. They do writerly things like that.
